Research Themes and Researcher

1. FM Processes Research

GFM is undertaking a strand of activities that focus on FM processes. This work has been informed by earlier research namely Spice FM, Generic Design and Construction Process Protocol and Facilities Management Process Protocol. Currently, GFM is undertaking research on development and implementation of Facilities Management Process Protocol within Malaysia Higher Education Institutions. GFM is also undertaking research on process improvement in determine maintenance budget for a public sector and with the relation of Public Private Partnership (PPP) and Public Finance Initiative (PFI) and the consideration of safety aspect in operation and maintenance process.

Key Researchers: Sr Dr Md Yusof Hamid, Sr Wan Samsul Zamani Wan Hamdan, Norehan Hj Mohd Noor, Mohamad Sohaimi Man

2. FM Usability
World Usability Day was founded in 13 November 2007 to ensure that the services and products important to life are easier to access and simpler to use. GFM with its collaborative partner CFM UK, aims to conduct a series of case studies and associated workshops, involving users, practitioners and researchers in a programme of action research; to develop concepts of usability for application in practice; to promote, develop and share methods, processes and techniques for the evaluation of buildings-in-use. Currently, GFM conducting research focuses on usability in Malaysia Public Healthcare. GFM is also undertaking research on usability evaluation in Malaysia shopping complex.

Key Researchers: Siti Norsazlina Harun, Sr Aida Affina Abdul Ghani, Sr Norazlina Kamarulzaman, Sr Mohd Fadzil Mat Yasin (University of Salford).

3. Space and Asset Management
GFM is undertaking an initiative with Facilities Management Division and Building Surveying Department, UiTM in conduct a series of case studies and research into develop and share methods of space and asset management. This is the starting point for the GFM and its team to promote the importance of space and asset management for facilities management. Currently, GFM initiate and consult the higher education sector in providing guideline and managing university asset.

Key Researchers: Sr Abdul Mutalib Aman Shah (Ministry of Higher Education), Sr Hasnan Hashim.

4. Community Based Facilities Management (CbFM)
CFM UK describes CbFM as the processes by which all the stakeholders in a community work together, to plan, deliver and maintain an enabling environment, within which the local economy can prosper, quality services can be delivered and natural resources protected, in order that citizens can enjoy a quality of life. Currently, GFM with CFM UK, conduct research focus on the role of school as community hub and its contribution to promote sustainable community.

Key Researchers: Dr Hj Ashrof Zainuddin, Hairul Nizam Mansur (University of Salford).

5. Building Performance Studies
Research on the effectiveness of cross-ventilation for houses in Malaysia are very significant in the context of today’s built environment. This research is analysed based on the thermal comfort impact of building’s users in a building which have many supporting variables. One of the important variable is the effectiveness of cross ventilation in the building. Currently member of GFM, carried out research in Kutai House which located in northern part of Malaysia in the state of Perak by using scientific approach – a ventilation meter recognised as’VelociCalc Plus Meter’. A model has been developed to analysed the performance indicators in this research area and contributed to sustainable FM.

Key Researchers: Sr Nur Azfahani Ahmad, Sr Nazhatulzalkis Jamaludin, Norazura Mizzal Azmi, Sr Ahmad Zaril Jamal, Mariaty Bahari

6. Building Pathology and Control
GFM is undertaking a strand of activities that focus on building control and building pathology studies in order to promote quality building. Research activities include local authorities involvement in building control, analysing condition of building, relationship of building condition survey and building maintenance management and analysis the symptom, causes and remedial of building defects for modern and traditional building. Currently member of GFM is undertaking research with Public Work Department (PWD) focusing on designing the building indicator system towards enhancing sustainable FM.

Key Researchers: Sr Nuzaihan Aras Agus Salim, Sr Suriani Ngah Abdul Wahab, Nurul Fadzila Zahari, Nor Amin Mohd Radzuan, Sr Alia Abdullah Salleh, Al-Hafzan Abdullah Halim, Mohd Dzulkarnean Ismail, Sr Mohd Azian Zaidi (Deakin University)

Activity and Learning Partnership

GFM is undertaking activities that focus on new knowledge through research, and seeks to share knowledge through networking and by creating learning partnership. GFM already creating learning partnership with Centre for Facilities Management, United Kingdom and contribute to the European FM standardisation process.

Further collaborative will be expected with Atkin Research and Development, CFM The Netherlands, IFM TU Vienna, IFMA Switzerland, ITMB University of Karlsruhe, LFO University of Dortmund and University of Applied Science (FHTW), Berlin.

In local context, GFM will involve with CREAM, CIDB in R&D project entitled ‘Developing Sustainable Strategies for Facilities Management - Toward Best Practices’. GFM will lead and initiate the National Asset and Facility Management (NAFAM) initiatives through academic and research contribution, provide training, seminar and workshop for the industry

A Facilities Management Vision

‘Facilities Management has an important role to play in developing Malaysia through to the Vision 2020 and contribute to National Asset and Facility Management (NAFAM) initiatives’

Group for Facilities Management (GFM) : Community of knowledge for FM excellence

INTRODUCTION
The Group for Facilities Management (GFM) is under a Centre for Knowledge & Understanding of Tropical Architecture & Interior (KUTAI), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM Perak), created to carry out research into facilities management (FM), to advance knowledge in the discipline and to support a network of client organisations in the built environment field.

GFM undertakes a programme of action research to contribute new knowledge, to develop new models, processes and tools and to ensure their effective application in practice. GFM carries out research into the organisation, performance and development of FM to support organisational effectiveness. GFM also undertakes strategic reviews of FM in organisations on a case-by-case basis and includes a phased study of the facilities organisation, its processes and systems, along with comparisons with best practice.

Through GFM, client organisations, service providers and community groups can access cutting edge thinking to support action and innovation. GFM's research work with its members uses a well-developed action research approach with a rigorous methodology. Research is led by action and is focused on the issues raised through engagement with the member organisations. The research cycle starts by understanding how practice in FM formulates its problems, converts this to a research question and seeks the evidence to support practical solutions
