Research Themes and Researcher

1. FM Processes Research

GFM is undertaking a strand of activities that focus on FM processes. This work has been informed by earlier research namely Spice FM, Generic Design and Construction Process Protocol and Facilities Management Process Protocol. Currently, GFM is undertaking research on development and implementation of Facilities Management Process Protocol within Malaysia Higher Education Institutions. GFM is also undertaking research on process improvement in determine maintenance budget for a public sector and with the relation of Public Private Partnership (PPP) and Public Finance Initiative (PFI) and the consideration of safety aspect in operation and maintenance process.

2. FM Usability
World Usability Day was founded in 13 November 2007 to ensure that the services and products important to life are easier to access and simpler to use. GFM with its collaborative partner CFM UK, aims to conduct a series of case studies and associated workshops, involving users, practitioners and researchers in a programme of action research; to develop concepts of usability for application in practice; to promote, develop and share methods, processes and techniques for the evaluation of buildings-in-use. Currently, GFM conducting research focuses on usability in Malaysia Public Healthcare. GFM is also undertaking research on usability evaluation in Malaysia shopping complex.

3. Space and Asset Management
GFM is undertaking an initiative with Facilities Management Division and Building Surveying Department, UiTM in conduct a series of case studies and research into develop and share methods of space and asset management. This is the starting point for the GFM and its team to promote the importance of space and asset management for facilities management. Currently, GFM initiate and consult the higher education sector in providing guideline and managing university asset.

4. Community Based Facilities Management (CbFM)
CFM UK describes CbFM as the processes by which all the stakeholders in a community work together, to plan, deliver and maintain an enabling environment, within which the local economy can prosper, quality services can be delivered and natural resources protected, in order that citizens can enjoy a quality of life. Currently, GFM with CFM UK, conduct research focus on the role of school as community hub and its contribution to promote sustainable community.

5. Building Performance Studies
Research on the effectiveness of cross-ventilation for houses in Malaysia are very significant in the context of today’s built environment. This research is analysed based on the thermal comfort impact of building’s users in a building which have many supporting variables. One of the important variable is the effectiveness of cross ventilation in the building. Currently member of GFM, carried out research in Kutai House which located in northern part of Malaysia in the state of Perak by using scientific approach – a ventilation meter recognised as’VelociCalc Plus Meter’. A model has been developed to analysed the performance indicators in this research area and contributed to sustainable FM.

6. Building Pathology and Control
GFM is undertaking a strand of activities that focus on building control and building pathology studies in order to promote quality building. Research activities include local authorities involvement in building control, analysing condition of building, relationship of building condition survey and building maintenance management and analysis the symptom, causes and remedial of building defects for modern and traditional building. Currently member of GFM is undertaking research with Public Work Department (PWD) focusing on designing the building indicator system towards enhancing sustainable FM.
